Squats and a big Overhead Press milestone for me

I had no idea tonight's workout was going to be noteworthy.  I had planned on going to the gym with Vivian but she texted me that she wasn't feeling well and to go without her.  This bummed me out a bit and I started the workout pre-occupied with how she was feeling.  Squat warm-ups went okay but I really didn't have that extra pop I'd need for my heavy singles.

Regardless, I pushed through my prescribed singles and finished with a top single at 445 lbs.  That'll probably be my second attempt in the meet on February 11.  I had some strength to spare and figure the meet psych will more than offset any effects of cutting to make weight for the night before.  Finished with three doubles at 405 that went very well.  I've really been feeling the positive effects of my form work on front squats.  While my back squat poundages aren't as high as they've ever been, I feel like my form is much better and will open the door to future gains.  I've been stuck at the mid 400's forever and I really need to get my squat into the 500's.

Squats:  135x10, 225x10, 315x5, 365x3, 405x1, 425x1, 435x1, 445x1, 405x2x3 sets

After my squat session, I felt a bit better and had some good workout mojo going but I still had no idea I was in for a memorable overhead press session.  My warm-ups felt very quick and the weight felt light.  I thought I might be able to give an attempt at 225 but it wasn't until my last warm-up, a single with 205 that I really felt it was possible.  The 205 felt not just light but comfortable.  In the past, it's felt like I had to wrestle with the 205 a bit to control it even if I could press it without much grunt.  Tonight, it felt like the power was coming straight from the floor, nothing was wasted or leaked.  I loaded 225 and tried to get a little bit of a psych on.

The press started so fast I actually bumped my forehead on the bar slightly when it hit the sticking point near the top of my head.  I had expected it to keep rocketing up and as I brought my head through, it bumped the momentarily slowed bar.  That startled me just a bit but I re-focused and pressed out the weight without any doubt.  I finally pressed 225 lbs over my head!  My three back-off sets with 185 were also strangely easy. I've never pressed 185 for more than 4 reps but tonight was able to blast three sets of 5.  Very strange but very much appreciated.  These are the types of training sessions that keep me coming back.  Like hitting a home run or blasting that last drive on the 18th hole right down the fairway, chasing that feeling when it all comes together is what makes it fun.

I finished up with face pulls, went home a happy dude and had a post-workout meal of plain greek yogurt and a scoop of peanut butter.
